The quiet, rural town of Moncks Corners is situated in southeast South Carolina, roughly 20 miles outside of North Charleston, and got its start in 1728 when French Protestant Huguenots were seeking escape from religious persecution in Europe.  Today the town has a population of 6,500 people and a cost of living just below the national average.  It is a growing spot, increasing by about 10% in the last 10 years, but shopping and amenities are still somewhat lacking (although there is a Wal-Mart).  Of the population, 30% is age 45 or better, and the median home income is below the national average.

Cypress Gardens, once part of a local plantation, is a 170-acre preserve with gardens, amphibians and exotic fish.  The 3,200-acre Mepkin Abbey Botanical Garden is a beautiful garden on the grounds of a monastery.
