Located in the northeastern part of the United States, New Jersey is 8,729 square miles in size and boasts 8.4 million residents, which is the 11th largest in the nation.
The climate in New Jersey is mostly temperate with humid hot summers and cold winters, with nor’easters pelting the state with rain and snow. The temperatures can range greatly between the ocean-facing Cape May-area (27 degrees in winter to 67 degrees in summer) to the mountains in Sussex (34 degrees in winter to 83 degrees in summer).
Trenton is the capital and Newark is the largest city in New Jersey. Nearly 18% of New Jersey’s ancestors are Italian and 37% of the population is Catholic. Jersey’s main industry is in oil refining with six major refineries in the state. Newark Liberty International Airport is considered one of the busiest airports in the nation. Atlantic City International Airport and Trenton-Mercer Airport also provide access throughout the state. Ferry service is also prevalent in New Jersey, especially among commuters.
In the summer, visitors spend hours on the beaches and boardwalks of New Jersey’s shoreline. Lighthouses, gardens, parks and wineries round out a great list of things to do while in New Jersey. Winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding and tubing can be enjoyed in the mountains of Sussex County.
